Former Buckskin Joe Site to Be Transformed into Walking and Biking Trails
The land that once hosted the Buckskin Joe frontier town is being reimagined as a network of walking and biking trails that will serve as the recreational backbone of Royal Gorge Ranch & Resort.
After Bill Koch purchased the property in 2010 and relocated the frontier town structures, the land sat largely untouched. The natural landscape — rock formations, ridgelines, meadows, and riparian areas — remained intact, waiting for a new purpose.
The trail transformation plan respects what the land already offers. Rather than bulldozing paths through the terrain, trails are being routed to follow natural contours, pass through interesting geological features, and connect viewpoints that have been hidden from public access for decades.
The former railroad trestles, being restored for hiking and biking, will serve as a signature trail feature toward the city-owned Point Alta Vista, where the views of the Royal Gorge Bridge are stunning. From the trestles, hikers and bikers can access trails leading to every eco area on the property.
Dog walking, trail running, and nature photography are all part of the trail experience. The trail system is designed for non-motorized use, keeping the community quiet and the wildlife undisturbed.
Buckskin Joe entertained visitors for decades. The trails that replace it will serve residents for generations.
